Like many other instruments in the collection of the Museum of the History of Science in Florence, this hodometer, which is used for measuring distances, was brought from Germany by Prince Mattias de' Medici in 1635. It was subsequently given to the members of the illustrious Accademia del Cimento, who used the instrument to measure the length of the terrestrial meridian.
